Presented by John Dailey
Prior to the canals, Ohio had a large agricultural system but no way to move those goods to market economically. After the canals opened, manufacturing quickly followed. John will discuss how the canal system opened the new frontier state of Ohio and led to its quick development as a financial and political powerhouse of the late 19th century.
John retired after 51 years in the surveying profession, where he became a proficient historian. He has been active in several professional societies and currently writes columns for the Cleveland Surveying News. He also presents programs on numerous topics including Ohio history, transportation, migration routes, land deed research, and interurban railways.
